Elephant Hill is a beloved 110-acre, undeveloped open space area located in the heart of El Sereno. For more than 20 years, Save Elephant Hill has led community efforts to protect and preserve this unique natural resource. We were recently awarded two grants and, building upon past engagement efforts, and we're conducting outreach for these projects.
The first grant involves the development of a Community Conservation Toolkit that will include a landscape design vision driven by the community. Additionally, SEH will support the Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority (MRCA) in developing an acquisition strategy and will help engage private property owners on MRCA’s acquisition processes, to support preserving additional open space parcels.
The second will educate the community about nature-based solutions for stormwater management, utilizing funds administered by the Water Foundation on behalf of the Los Angeles County Safe Clean Water Program (SCWP). SEH is also receiving technical assistance from the SCWP, who contracted Paradigm Engineering to work with SEH to identify potential stormwater improvements on Elephant Hill that may be considered for future funding by the County. This effort will focus on nature-based solutions such as realigning soil into berms or basins as well as utilizing native trees and plants to retain stormwater that currently flows off Elephant Hill and into streets and residential properties.
The Elephant Hill Community Conservation Toolkit and the Stormwater Initiative advance the community’s vision for restoring a portion of Elephant Hill managed by the MRCA and acquiring additional open space.
